You’re very welcome to explore baptism at St Luke’s.
Baptism (often called a christening) is a special celebration of love, belonging, and God’s care for us. It is a sign of God’s blessing and an invitation to grow in faith, hope, and love within the family of the Church.
Through baptism, we become part of God’s wider family — not only here at St Luke’s, but also alongside Christians across the world and throughout generations past and present.
We encourage families to get to know the church community by joining us at a Sunday service or one of our social events.
Baptisms are often held during our main Sunday service as part of the worshipping life of the church, although other arrangements can also be made.
If you would like to find out more, simply drop an email to the Vicar, Rev. Yin-An, or our Administrator for an informal conversation and more details about the next steps and arrangements.
Common Questions
Do we need to come to church before arranging a baptism?
We encourage families to come along to a Sunday service or community event so that we can get to know one another.
Baptism is about becoming part of the wider family of the Church, and we would love to welcome you into the life of St Luke’s.
Is baptism only for babies?
Not at all. Baptism is for people of all ages — babies, children, young people, and adults.
If you are exploring baptism for yourself, we would be delighted to talk with you.
What happens during a baptism?
During the service, prayers are said for the person being baptised, water is poured over their head, and we celebrate God’s love and blessing.
Parents and godparents also make promises to help nurture the child in faith and love.
Do we need to be regular churchgoers?
Many families who enquire about baptism are not regular churchgoers, and that is absolutely okay.
Baptism is often the beginning of a journey of faith and connection.
We simply encourage people to be open to exploring church life and becoming part of the community.
Can we choose godparents?
Yes. Godparents play a special role in supporting a child as they grow in faith and life.
They are people who promise to encourage, pray for, and walk alongside the child on their journey.
In the Church of England, godparents should themselves be baptised Christians, and it is helpful if they have also been confirmed.
Usually, there are at least three godparents, although we understand that every family situation is different.
If you are unsure about who could be a godparent, or have questions about your own circumstances,
please do not worry — we would be very happy to have a conversation and help guide you through the options.
Is there a fee for baptism?
There is no charge for baptism itself. Baptism is a gift of God’s grace and is freely offered to all.
Many families and guests choose to make a donation on the day to support the life and ministry of St Luke’s, helping us care for our church building and continue serving future generations in our community. Any gift, large or small, is always greatly appreciated but entirely voluntary.
Can we use the church facilities for a celebration afterwards?
Yes, of course. St Luke’s has a bright and welcoming church hall called the Transept, attached to the church, with a small kitchenette available.
The hall can be hired for refreshments or a gathering after the baptism service.
If you would like to enquire about using the Transept, please mention it when you get in touch.
What should we do next?
The best first step is simply to get in touch for a conversation.
You can email Rev. Yin-An or our Administrator to ask questions, find out more, and talk about possible dates.
